Maintain your contact information in Workday
Federal immigration regulations require WashU to report specific contact information for all F-1 and J-1 students to the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
We report the following information from your Workday Student account to SEVIS:
- Physical local address (U.S. residential address)
- Phone number
- Email address
If you have a pending or approved USCIS petition (i.e. I-539, I-765, etc.), you must also report your contact information through the USCIS AR-11.
Understanding Workday Student
Workday Student is WashU’s official system for academic administration, including student records, registration, and financials. All F-1 and J-1 students must ensure their contact information is accurate and up-to-date in Workday.
Manage your addresses in Workday
All student addresses are stored and reported from Workday. There are two primary address types:
1. Home Contact Information (Your responsibility to update)
| Address type | Definition | Action required |
|---|---|---|
| Student Local Address | Your physical U.S. residence if you do NOT live on campus or in a WashU Residential Life managed property. | Required for all off-campus students. Must be updated within 10 days of any move. |
| Other Home Addresses | Your foreign/permanent address, or any other home addresses you wish to track. | You can enter multiple addresses and identify their usage. |
Critical requirement
If you live off campus, you MUST enter and maintain a “Student Local Address” and update it within 10 days of any change of residence, per federal rules.
2. Institutional Contact Information (WashU managed)
This address type is used for students living:
- In on-campus residences
- In off-campus properties managed by WashU Residential Life
Note: Students cannot edit their Institutional Contact Information. It is managed automatically by WashU Residential Life.

IMPORTANT
SEVIS verifies addresses with a program called Address Doctor and rejects information that is not complete/properly formatted. OISS follow-up or clarification could put you out of compliance with the 10-day reporting requirement.
U.S. address formatting guidelines
Failure to follow these guidelines will cause a SEVIS address rejection and confusion for the post office and possible mail delivery delay.
- Do not list a WashU department for your local address. You must indicate where you are physically living.
- Building numbers come before street names. Don’t put Forsyth 6470. It should be 6470 Forsyth Blvd. Putting the name before the number is an invalid format.
- Street information goes on Address Line 1 and apartment/room information goes on Address Line 2. Listing the apartment/room number on Address Line 1 is invalid.
- If you live off-campus, put both your street and apartment information.
- You do not need to include both your suburb name and the city name. For example, if you live in University City, your address should not contain both “University City” and “St. Louis.” Just pick one or the other – whichever you prefer.
- For help on Zip Codes, go to the ZIP code lookup section on the U.S. Postal Service website. Input your address information, and it will give you the correct ZIP code and formatting.
